Australia Travel Guide for Indian Travellers

Australia Travel Guide for Indian Travellers

Australia is one of those destinations where good planning can make a much bigger difference than simply adding more sightseeing to the itinerary. The country is vast, its major attractions are spread across very different regions, and travelling between them can take considerably more time than a first-time visitor may expect.

For Indian travellers, Australia is particularly rewarding because one holiday can combine vibrant cities, beaches, wildlife, scenic drives, theme parks, food experiences and some of the world's most unusual natural landscapes. It also works well for families, couples, honeymoons and longer holidays.

The biggest planning mistake we see is trying to cover too much. A 7-day Australia holiday should not try to look like a 15-day itinerary. With limited time, it is usually better to enjoy two well-connected destinations properly than spend a large part of the trip checking in, flying and transferring between cities.

For a first visit, Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Cairns are among the easiest destinations to combine, but the right combination depends on the season, your interests and who you are travelling with. A family with children may prioritise Gold Coast and Cairns, while a couple may prefer Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road and Sydney.

Our approach is simple: plan Australia around the experience you want, not around the number of cities you can fit into a map. The best itinerary is the one that gives you enough time to enjoy Australia rather than constantly moving through it.

How many days do you need in Australia?
For a first trip, 10–14 days is a comfortable starting point. With 7 days, it is better to concentrate on two regions rather than attempt to see the entire country. Travellers with 2–3 weeks can combine Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland and a scenic road-trip segment without making every day a transfer day.you can refer to 12-Day Australia Itinerary – Melbourne, Gold Coast, Cairns & Sydney

What should you budget for?

Instead of looking only at the package or hotel price, divide your Australia budget into five parts:

International flights + accommodation + domestic transport + sightseeing/experiences + food and daily expenses.

Domestic transport and paid experiences can make a significant difference to the final cost, particularly when several cities are included.

The biggest Australia planning mistake

Trying to see too much.

If you have only a week, don't attempt Sydney + Melbourne + Gold Coast + Cairns + Perth. Australia is not Europe, where several countries can be combined quickly by train. Long distances make a carefully paced itinerary much more rewarding. Tourism Australia also recommends tailoring the number of destinations to the time available.

Australia Travel Guide for Indian Travellers Travel Tips & Insights

Geography

Australia's size is one of the first things you should consider before planning your itinerary. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Perth and Darwin may all appear together on a map, but they are separated by substantial distances.

This is why we recommend planning Australia region by region rather than trying to connect every famous destination in one trip.

For example, Sydney and Melbourne make a sensible combination for a first-time city-focused holiday. Gold Coast can work particularly well with Brisbane or Sydney for families, while Cairns is best considered as a separate tropical Queensland experience because of the Great Barrier Reef and surrounding natural attractions.

The same principle applies to road trips. Driving between destinations can be a wonderful part of an Australian holiday when the route itself is the experience. It makes less sense when you are simply driving hundreds of kilometres to reach the next city.

A useful planning rule is:

7 days: concentrate on one region or two closely connected destinations.
10–14 days: two to four destinations can be considered, depending on the route.
2–3 weeks: you have much more flexibility for combining cities, nature and a road-trip segment.

Australia also has several climate zones. The weather in Melbourne can be completely different from Cairns at the same time of year, so choosing destinations and choosing travel dates should be done together.

Currency

The currency used in Australia is the Australian Dollar (AUD).

Australia is a largely card-friendly destination, so there is generally no need for Indian travellers to carry a large amount of Australian cash. Cards and contactless payments are widely used for hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, transport and attractions.

The more important question is not how much cash to carry, but how to control the overall cost of the trip.

Australia can become expensive when several small costs are added together — domestic flights, airport transfers, parking, attraction tickets, meals and hotel changes. A hotel that looks cheaper on its own may not remain cheaper once daily transport is added.

When comparing Australia holiday options, we therefore recommend looking at the total cost and convenience of the itinerary, rather than comparing hotel rates or flight fares in isolation.

For families and longer stays, accommodation with a kitchenette can also be useful for preparing some breakfasts, snacks or simple vegetarian meals.

Getting Here

Australia is a long-haul destination from India, so the flight you choose can influence the first and last day of your holiday more than many travellers realise.

Sydney and Melbourne are common entry points for first-time visitors, but there is no reason to automatically fly into Sydney. Your international arrival and departure cities should ideally fit the itinerary you are building.

For example, if your holiday is centred around Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road and southern Australia, starting in Melbourne can avoid unnecessary backtracking. Similarly, a Queensland-focused family holiday may work better when planned around Brisbane, Gold Coast and Cairns.

When comparing flights from India, don't look only at the airfare. Check the arrival time, number of connections, baggage allowance and how easily the flight connects with your onward domestic itinerary.

For multi-city holidays, an open-jaw itinerary — arriving in one Australian city and departing from another — can sometimes save a domestic flight and a full day of backtracking.

One practical rule we follow is to avoid scheduling an important domestic connection too close to your international arrival. Allow enough time for immigration, baggage collection and airport transfers. A small saving on a flight is rarely worth turning the first day of your holiday into a stressful connection.

Visas

Indian passport holders need the appropriate Australian visitor visa before travelling to Australia. Visa requirements, supporting documents and processing times can change depending on the applicant's circumstances, so travellers should check the latest requirements through Australia's official immigration channels before applying.

What applicants should generally be prepared to demonstrate

  • genuine tourism purpose
  • financial capacity
  • employment/business/student background
  • travel history, where applicable
  • ties to India
  • proposed travel plans
  • supporting identity and financial documents

Your visa file should tell the same story as your itinerary. If your application says you are travelling for 10 days but your financial documents, leave approval or proposed travel plan suggest otherwise, the overall application can become harder to explain.

Applicants are advised to regularly check the official Visa Application Centre / Australian Embassy website for the most up-to-date visa requirements, policies, and any applicable quarantine or health regulations, as these are subject to change without prior notice.

Passport Requirements

  • Clear copy of all used and unused pages of the applicant’s passport

  • Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the intended date of travel

  • Original passport is not required at the time of application

  • Visa Application Form (Form 1419) duly filled and signed

  • Covering Letter addressed to The Australian High Commission

  • Personal Bank Statement for the last 3 months

  • Salary Slips for the last 3 months

  • Income Tax Returns for the last 3 years

  • Aadhaar Card or Voter ID (mandatory)

  • Occupation Proof

If Invited by a Relative / Friend

In addition to the above, the following documents are required:

  • Passport copy and visa copy of the inviter

  • Signed Invitation Letter

  • Proof of relationship between the applicant and the inviter

  • Financial documents of the inviter (if applicable)

In Case of Sponsorship

  • All documents as per the applicant’s profile

  • Sponsorship Letter duly signed by the sponsor

  • Approximate processing time: 15–20 working days

  • Please note that processing timelines are indicative only and may vary based on individual cases and at the discretion of the Australian Embassy / Consulate.

Best Time to Travel

Australia is too geographically diverse for a single “best time.”

The best time to travel to Australia depends on the region, but overall September to November and March to May offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds. December to February is peak summer and holiday season, while June to August is ideal for northern Australia and wildlife experiences. Budget travellers may find better deals during shoulder seasons.

There isn't one perfect month for the whole of Australia. If someone tells you that “September is the best month for Australia”, ask which Australia they mean. The ideal travel window for Cairns is not necessarily the ideal window for Melbourne or Tasmania.

Money Saving Tips

  • Book international flights early where possible, especially if travelling during school holidays or other busy periods.

  • Use public transport in major cities. Staying near a convenient train, tram or bus connection can reduce both transport costs and the need for taxis.

  • Consider apartment-style accommodation with a kitchenette for families or longer stays. Preparing breakfast, snacks or a few simple meals can make a noticeable difference to the overall budget.

  • Compare flying with driving before deciding. A road trip is not automatically cheaper once car rental, fuel, insurance, parking and additional accommodation are included. For long distances, a domestic flight may save both money and valuable holiday time.

  • Don't add destinations just because they are famous. Every additional city usually means another transfer, check-in, flight or rental-car day. Removing one destination can sometimes save more than finding a cheaper hotel.

  • Travel in shoulder periods when your dates are flexible. Accommodation and flight prices can vary significantly depending on demand.

  • Book popular experiences in advance and compare combination tickets where several attractions are planned. This can be particularly useful for families visiting multiple theme parks or attractions.

  • Stay outside the CBD when practical. A well-connected hotel slightly away from the centre can offer better value than paying a premium simply for a central address.

  • Choose paid experiences selectively. Australia has many memorable experiences that are free or inexpensive, including beaches, viewpoints, parks and coastal scenery. Save more of your activity budget for experiences that are difficult to arrange independently, such as Great Barrier Reef cruises or selected wildlife encounters.

  • Use supermarkets such as Woolworths and Coles for breakfast items, snacks, fresh produce and simple meals. This is particularly useful for families and travellers with specific vegetarian food preferences.

  • Look at the complete holiday cost. The cheapest hotel or flight is not necessarily the cheapest option once transfers, baggage, transport and lost sightseeing time are included.

What To Pack

Packing for Australia depends more on your route and travel month than on the country itself. Sydney in winter, Melbourne in spring and Cairns in the tropical north can require very different clothing at the same time of year.

Essentials

  • Valid passport and visa documents

  • Travel insurance details

  • International debit/credit card and a small amount of AUD

  • Australian Type I power adapter

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and a good sun hat

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Basic medicines and prescriptions, preferably in their original packaging

  • Light day bag for sightseeing

Pack according to your itinerary

Sydney & Melbourne: Carry layers rather than relying on one heavy jacket. Temperatures can change during the day, particularly during the cooler months.

Gold Coast & Brisbane: Light, comfortable clothing, swimwear, sun protection and a light layer for evenings are usually more useful than heavy clothing.

Cairns & tropical Queensland: Lightweight clothing, swimwear, sun protection and a light rain layer are useful. If you are planning reef or rainforest experiences, quick-dry clothing can be particularly convenient.

Road trips: Carry comfortable footwear, a refillable water bottle and a small day bag that can be kept accessible during sightseeing stops.

A useful tip for Indian families

Don't pack for every possible situation. Australia has well-stocked supermarkets, pharmacies and shopping centres, so there is little benefit in filling your luggage with items that can easily be purchased there.

If travelling with children, carry the specific snacks or medicines they are accustomed to, but avoid taking large quantities of everyday food unless there is a genuine dietary reason.

Most importantly, check the weather for each city on your actual itinerary before packing. Australia's climate varies considerably by region, and Tourism Australia itself recommends packing according to both destination and season.

Australia Travel Guide for Indian Travellers Regions

Sydney (New South Wales)

Sydney (New South Wales)

Best for: First-time visitors, families, couples and iconic Australia experiences
Recommended stay: 3–4 nights

Sydney is usually the easiest introduction to Australia because it gives you the country's famous harbour, beaches, city life and easy day-trip options in one place. Don't try to squeeze everything into two days. Allow time for the harbour and city, then keep another day for Bondi or the Blue Mountains depending on your interests.

Our tip: If this is your first Australia trip, Sydney is worth giving proper time to rather than treating it as just an arrival city.

Brisbane (Queensland)

Brisbane (Queensland)

Best for: A relaxed city stay and Queensland combinations
Recommended stay: 2–3 nights

Brisbane is often overlooked because travellers rush towards the Gold Coast, but it can work well as a softer introduction to Queensland. It is particularly useful when building an itinerary around Brisbane, Gold Coast and nearby experiences.

Our tip: Choose Brisbane when you want a city experience without the intensity of a packed sightseeing schedule.

Gold Coast (Queensland)

Gold Coast (Queensland)

Best for: Families, theme parks, beaches and relaxed holidays
Recommended stay: 3–4 nights

Gold Coast is one of the easiest Australian destinations for Indian families because several very different experiences can be combined without changing hotels every day. Beaches, theme parks, wildlife and hinterland experiences give families plenty of choice.

Our tip: Don't make every day a theme-park day. Keep at least some time for the beaches or hinterland so the trip feels like an Australia holiday rather than a theme-park tour.

Perth

Perth

Best for: Travellers looking for a less conventional Australia itinerary
Recommended stay: 3–5 nights

Perth makes more sense when you want to explore Western Australia rather than simply add another city to an east-coast itinerary. The experience is more spacious and relaxed, with beaches, nearby nature and access to some excellent regional journeys.

Our tip: Don't add Perth to a short first-time Australia trip simply to collect another city. It deserves to be planned as part of a Western Australia itinerary.

Margaret River

Margaret River

Best for: Couples, scenic drives, food and nature
Recommended stay: 2–3 nights

Margaret River is a very different Australia from the big cities. It works particularly well for travellers who enjoy scenic drives, beaches, nature and a slower pace.

Our tip: This is better suited to travellers with additional time than to someone trying to complete a classic 7-day Australia itinerary.

Melbourne (Victoria)

Melbourne (Victoria)

Best for: Couples, food lovers, culture, cafés and road-trip combinations
Recommended stay: 3–4 nights

Melbourne has a different personality from Sydney. It is a strong choice for travellers who enjoy cafés, food, art, shopping and neighbourhood experiences rather than ticking off major landmarks.

It is also one of the best starting points for the Great Ocean Road.

Our tip: If you have enough time, don't treat the Great Ocean Road as just another excursion. It is the road journey itself that makes the experience worthwhile.

Alice Springs

Alice Springs

Best for: Travellers interested in Australia's Red Centre and outback
Recommended stay: Depends on itinerary

Alice Springs offers a completely different perspective of Australia, far removed from the coastal cities that dominate first-time itineraries.

Our tip: Don't treat Alice Springs and Uluru as interchangeable destinations. They are separate experiences and should be planned according to the time available and the route you want to follow.

Cairns (Queensland)

Cairns (Queensland)

Best for: Great Barrier Reef, rainforest and tropical Queensland
Recommended stay: 3–4 nights

Cairns is less about the city itself and more about what lies around it. It is the gateway for travellers who want to experience the Great Barrier Reef, tropical landscapes and rainforest.

Our tip: If the Great Barrier Reef is one of the main reasons for visiting Cairns, give the reef a proper day rather than trying to squeeze it between several other full-day activities.

Darwin (Northern Territory)

Darwin (Northern Territory)

Best for: Wildlife, Indigenous culture and Australia's tropical Top End
Recommended stay: 3–4 nights or as part of a wider Northern Territory itinerary

Darwin feels very different from Sydney or Melbourne and is better suited to travellers looking for Australia's tropical north and a more nature-focused experience.

Our tip: Darwin is not usually a priority for a first 7–10 day Australia trip. Consider it when you have more time or specifically want to explore the Top End.

Adelaide

Adelaide

Best for: Food, wine, relaxed city breaks and regional exploration
Recommended stay: 2–4 nights

Adelaide is a good choice for travellers who prefer a quieter city experience and want to explore South Australia's food and wine regions.

Our tip: It works particularly well as part of a broader South Australia itinerary rather than as a quick add-on to a crowded east-coast trip.

Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island

Best for: Wildlife and nature
Recommended stay: 2–3 nights

Kangaroo Island is worth considering when wildlife and nature are priorities. It offers a very different experience from Australia's major cities and is best approached as a dedicated nature escape.

Our tip: Don't add Kangaroo Island simply because you have heard its name. Include it when wildlife and slower-paced travel are genuinely important to your trip.
